First Shipping Cart Experience - Hint: A GOOD One!

Image
I don't usually order items online even locally due to some hesitation especially for scams much more for items from outside the country. But sometimes the items I am looking for is not available on local stores or even in Malls, so what choice do I have? The first item I ordered online was an SSD for my old Toshiba laptop ( which I was using for about 2-years while working online ) since it was a good deal from macsales.com as it was a sale. International shipping cost are quite high and much more if using branded couriers. That time I used USPS priority mail. Yes they issue a tracking number but only effective before it leaves the US, after that no more updates when it is hand over to Philippines' Postal Service. It's a waiting game and trust that your item will arrive at the correct Post Office. Yes, the item I ordered arrived and there's a small fee, about P50 before I can get the item. I installed it and I was happy with the item! I had heard some 3rd p...

My first Php 78.22 - Buying and Selling Bitcoin using coins.ph

Image
I know it's kinda late for a tech-savvy kind of person like me adopting cryptocurrency but looking at the surge of prices last December 2017 that made me thinking, " If only I bought a few coins (not satoshi) a few years ago when it was affordable, I could be rich now :( " That is the beauty of not knowing the future. Last January 9, 2018 when the price of a bitcoin is still around Php 801,191 (yeah that's really high) - I signed up for an account at coins.ph  and said to myself "why not try for myself what this cryptocurrency is, bitcoin in particular and how it feels like to be in the market of bitcoin trading" . I used GCash to fund my coins.ph account, added Php 1,000.00 and converted it to satoshi -- a small part of a bitcoin, since I can't afford one whole bitcoin. :) Guess what, after a few hours the bitcoin price drops and the drop is quite steep that when you're new to investing you'll say to yourself, "abort, get your c...

Developing sites locally and using .dev domains?

Image
Are you a web developer and using local development server? You're probably using a Linux Virtual Machine or Vagrant Images that serves the same purpose - serve website locally. You might also use a .dev domain on your local server - which is great identifier from your live domain names. Maybe this time you need to update your /etc/hosts - when using Macs or Linux machines. In reference to this article , you may need to update your hosts configuration because sooner or later, major browsers will adopt this and .dev domains in your local web server will no longer work. There are ways, in which you need to install an SSL certificate (self-signed) to make it work. I have update my Chrome browser and my .dev sites are no longer working anymore :( There are options like using .test or .localhost but for me, I might use the .test for now and hopefully things will work as before.

STAINGATE, 2015 Retina Macbook Pro 13"

Image
Do you own a Early-2015 Retina MacBook Pro 13-inch? Worst case scenario, this is not my case. If you do, then I'm sure you've heard or familiar with the term "staingate". If not, then here's a reference site (staingate.org) to read about it. "Staingate" is a term used to associate an issue with specific models of MacBook Pro and sad to say I am seeing this kind of pattern that seems to a scratch-like on my machine. When you try to clean it off with a micro-fiber cloth it doesn't goes away but instead gets bigger as time goes by. The first time I noticed it, it was just small dot at first, maybe about 7-8 months of normal usage - I seldom carry my MacBook Pro as I just work at home. I didn't mind too much because it normally happens, scratches. I didn't want to be fussy about it, and besides it doesn't interfere with my work while I'm on the machine -- at that time. After year and a half, the scratches created a patter...

Posture when working long hours of coding using a laptop

Image
Proper posture is important specially when working in a laptop. Prolong improper posture can lead to several body pain including lower back, upper back, neck, wrist and it gets worst the longer you do it. It's good to have an ergonomic laptop stand when you're working with a laptop so you don't arch your back while looking into the laptop screen. I strongly suggest you get a monitor that is compatible with your laptop and set it up on your desk elevated comfortably to your eye level. That way you can sit properly with your back straight and correct posture while working for more than 6-hours a day on a desk. Again, another concern - prolonged sitting and the related health issues. I've read a lot of articles about the effects of prolonged sitting it is also a concern to be addressed. Yes you might have addressed your ergonomic posture when working on your laptop while sitting but it's also good to address the underlying health related issues of prolonged...

MacOS High Sierra Compatibility

Image
Apple recently had its WWDC (World Wide Developer Conference) last June 5, 2017 and one of the highlights in the conference is the new macOS High Sierra 10.13 . We know that not all Mac hardware will be supported as technology improves software does too. If you're using a Mac computer, especially early ones and aged gracefully, you might want to check out if you can upgrade ( for free ) when the new macOS High Sierra is going to be available this year. If your Mac computer is just about the year model as below, then there's a high chance you'll be fine. MacBook Pro – 2010 or later models MacBook – Late 2009 or later models MacBook Air – 2010 or later models iMac – Late 2009 or later models Mac Mini – 2010 or later models Mac Pro – 2010 or later models You can read more about macOS High Sierra compatibility on this link .

A glitch in a reputable PH bank is in the news

Image
Another news is trending my twitter feed about a glitch in a reputable bank in the country ( Bank of the Philippine Islands ) which makes me think how is my account with them... I can't check online as they already made a temporary shutdown on their online facility. They mentioned that everything will be restored within the day. Hopefully everything will be OK once the glitch is taken care of. I have read lots of rants and questions in social media but I understand that it's not that easy to restore real-time data and I'm sure their IT team is doing everything to restore the system back to normal. I don't want to be in their ( BPI IT guys ) shoes right now.
